For Holland Construction Services, 2017 was a year of building momentum. The firm doubled its revenue in just three years from 2014 to 2016, reaching nearly $180 million in construction revenue. In 2017, it sustained that impressive level in construction volume. According to President Mike Marchal, 2018 is stacking up to be another record year. “We have a very healthy backlog of projects and the most effective team I’ve ever seen,” he says.

Several high-profile projects wrapped up in 2017, including the new HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and adjoining medical office building, a new medical office building at Memorial Hospital East, and the Sunset Ridge Office Building in St. Louis County.

“We’re well diversified,” says Marchal, “but we’re very busy in the multi-family and independent senior living markets.” The luxury apartment communities of Alinea-Town & Country and Evo in Richmond Heights were finished, as was Sycamore Creek Senior Living facility in Pickerington, Ohio.

Some of Holland’s jobs-in-progress are the Jacksonville (Illinois) Middle School and the new Fairview Heights Recreation Center. Continuing the trend of work on multi-family and retirement communities, they are building several luxury apartment complexes in the St. Louis market, including Encore at Forest Park, Sunnen Station (Maplewood), Chouteau’s Grove Apartments and The Villages at Twin Oaks.

“After the success of Sycamore Creek Senior Living,” adds Marchal, “we’re expanding our reach into Ohio with three more senior living projects.”

“Our focus has been on our repeat clients this year,” explains Marchal. “We’re engaging with them earlier in the process; working to understand their needs and delivering on their budgets and schedules. We’ve examined and improved our internal systems and processes. It’s allowed us to enhance the service we provide them.”

Holland’s workforce has grown exponentially, adding 25 new hires in the past two years. Some are office staff but most are at job sites. “We’re intentional and deliberate in the way we attract talent,” says Marchal. “We have a super strong team right now.”

Most notably, the firm has added to its management and leadership staff. Until 2017, upper management consisted of founder and CEO Bruce Holland, Executive Vice President and COO David Birk, and Marchal as president. In the past year, Holland promoted seven individuals from within, naming them partners.

“Watching the leaders grow within the company has been the most fulfilling thing for me,” says Marchal. “It allows us to provide an even higher quality experience to our clients.”
