Wesclin Community School District #3’s student population was outgrowing their its school space. The district knew it needed to build a new high school on a rigid timeline. The proposed new facility would allow the existing high school and rooms to be used for lower grades, facilitating curriculum expansion and additional classrooms at those levels. The construction of this new high school would affect the entire school district.
Wesclin chose to work with Holland Construction Services, Inc. on the new high school.
The district had a specific list of items that needed to be addressed in the new building. Addressing these needs within its timeline and budget presented some challenges:
- Completing the project on time despite adverse weather conditions
- Determining how to best utilize the budget and stay on schedule
- Creating space for more extracurricular activities
Holland knew it would be imperative to work closely with Wesclin’s team and FGM Architects in order to meet all of the school district’s needs. Doing so, Holland was able to overcome all of Wesclin’s challenges and achieve its goals.
Finishing the Project Before the Start of the School Year
An extremely harsh winter was a major challenge during the construction of Wesclin High School. Due to poor conditions, a portion of the roof wasn’t able to be installed prior to heavy snowfall. The issue halted progress slightly, but Holland’s team worked to adjust the schedule and get the roof completed as quickly as possible. Construction was able to stay on pace so the project was completed prior to the start of the next school year.
Getting Involved in the Project During Pre-Construction
Holland stepped in during the pre-construction phase and helped to keep the project within budget while providing the space and amenities the school district needed. Joining the team early in the process allowed Holland to understand the school district’s goals and foresee potential hurdles as the companies aligned their resources to ensure the project’s success.
Building Ample Space for All High School Activities
Wesclin had outgrown its current high school space. The new building allows the school to offer additional courses to enhance the educational experience. It features two classroom wings, a media center, computer and science labs, band and chorus rooms, a stage and cafetorium, and administrative space in addition to athletic facilities for on-campus games. These include a gymnasium and an outdoor all-weather track and field facility with grandstands and a press box.
Holland completed the 120,000 square-foot high school on time and on budget. The $22.5 million project met all of Wesclin’s needs and has been well received by students and staff alike.
