SALEM, ILL. – Holland Construction Services Inc. completed the new Family Aquatic Center in Salem’s Bryan Memorial Park just in time for a Memorial Day weekend kickoff. City of Salem Recreation Director Sherry Daniels said that there was an excellent turnout for the grand opening with as many as 150 at the open house and 600 by the time the pool opened at noon.
The aquatic center replaces the former public pool in Salem that was more than 70 years old, believed to be Illinois’ oldest public pool. Located near the site of the former swimming pool, the new $3.4 million facility includes an 8,937-square-foot main pool, a 720-square-foot toddler pool, a large bathhouse, mechanical building and new drive and parking lot. A large water slide, several water features, play areas and large shade umbrellas surrounded by extensive landscaping make the recreational center a fun summer retreat. The new multi-purpose facility will also allow for more aquatic activities for the community, providing opportunities for competitive and recreational swimming and availability for private parties.
"Holland Construction was the low bidder on the project and have been very cooperative," Daniels said. The project was completed on time, despite extreme wet weather last fall that delayed underground utilities and site concrete work, and wet spring weather that hampered pool completion. "We are hopeful that this new facility will in a round-about way provide economic development opportunities to the city and bring more visitors to the area," Daniels said.
Design was provided by the teamwork of St. Louis aquatic designers Counsilman-Hunsaker and FGM Architects of O’Fallon, Ill.
