Bruce Holland one of six recipients of Kimmel Awards

April 11, 2006

Holland Construction Services Inc. President Bruce Holland was one of the Southwestern Illinois community leaders honored in April for extensive service to the area in which they live and work.

"I was thrilled to receive this most prestigious award as there are so many others that are deserving of recognition for their community service," Holland said. "I would not have been afforded the time to devote outside my business activities if it were not for the support of my HCS associates and my family. We understand that God has been very good to us, and we have the responsibility to give our time and efforts for just causes."

The Kimmel Leadership Center held its 17th annual recognition program at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. The award is named for former SIUE board member Carol Kimmel, who was a strong advocate and participant in community service. Kimmel Award recipients must demonstrate a variety of community service contributions for an extended period, outstanding voluntary community service, and a commitment to the citizens of Illinois or Missouri.

Holland's extensive service includes serving as chair of the Leadership Council Transportation Committee and as a member of the executive committee. He is also on the Regional Commerce and Growth Association Board, chairing the Mississippi River Bridge Committee. In addition, he chairs a task force of the Regional Business Council for the Mississippi River Bridge. He is a member of the St. Louis United Way Board and the nominating committee, and has served as the Illinois United Way Board Chairman and chaired the Illinois United Way annual campaign.

Holland was previously recognized for his commitment to community service when he was honored with the Boy Scout of America Distinguished Citizen Award, the Belleville Chamber Commitment to Community Award and the Leadership Council Salute to Southwestern Illinois Award.

A number of SIUE students were also honored at this year's Kimmel program for community service and leadership. In addition to Holland, Kevin M. Pesko, president of the Bank of Belleville; Kurt Schroeder, law partner at Mathis, Marifian, Richter and Grandy; Antigone Simpson, volunteer at Alton Memorial Hospital and Sharon Hendricks, volunteer for the John DeShields Housing Development received the Kimmel Community Service Awards. Anna Heavner received the Kimmel Scholarship for her graduate study at SIUE in recognition of a variety of service work at the college.
