Holland Construction Begins Work on Fellowship Centers for St. Nicholas Church

O’FALLON, ILL. - Holland Construction Services, Inc. recently began construction on a new Faith Formation Spirituality Center and Activity Center on the grounds of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church at 625 St. Nicholas Drive.
Ann Daniels, business administrator for St. Nicholas, said the church first turned to Holland Construction in 1998 due to their excellent reputation.

“We had such a great experience the first time with the expansion to the church, it was an easy choice this time,” Daniels said. “We find Holland to be very professional; they bring in quality subcontractors and come in on time and within the budget.”

Completion of the new 11,628-square-foot activity center and the 9,800-square-foot spirituality center is scheduled for December, each with brick exterior with a cast stone band, and an arched cast stone entrance. The Spirituality Center will contain a chapel, nursery, three “Catechesis of the Good Shepherd” classrooms, a large group gathering area featuring a serving area, and smaller formal and informal discussion rooms to accommodate small breakout groups.

The Activity Center features a youth room, three classrooms and a multi-purpose room designed with social functions as well as sport activities in mind. Wall panels and dual lighting systems can accommodate basketball, volleyball or other sports activities, or can be dimmed down to create a warm environment for large receptions.

“The new facilities will allow for events and meetings of all sizes, and provide many fellowship opportunities; educational opportunities for adults and youth, athletic activities,” Daniels added. “The parish is a very strong Catholic community and has shown continuous growth under Fr. Bill Hitpas’ leadership. There is a big need here for this type of space.”
Daniels said the project is going very well.

“Holland’s expertise was very valuable during the design phase, and they keep us informed and up to date on a weekly basis,” she said.

In 1998 Holland completed a church expansion that included parish offices, extension of the gathering area, a multi-purpose area, meeting rooms and partial renovation to the existing building.

W. B. Ittner Inc. of Fairview Heights are the architects on the project. Hoelscher Engineering, also of Fairview Heights, performed civil engineering work, and Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing engineer was BRIC Partnership of Belleville.

St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church formed in 1982, showing steady growth to its now current 1,400 families. The church also includes a Catholic Kindergarten through eighth grade school co-owned with St. Clare Parish, and a Parish School of Religion.
