Holland Construction Renovating New Simmons Law Firm Offices
ALTON, ILL. – Simmons Browder Gianaris Angelides &?Barnerd LLC will soon be settling into new digs – in a refurbished, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified building in the heart of Alton. Holland Construction Services Inc. began pre-construction work last fall and worked with project architects Hurford Architects Inc. of Glen Carbon throughout the design process on the 39-year-old former Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. building at 1 Court Street. "We wanted to work with a contractor with the experience to create a space that is functional, efficient and environmentally friendly," said John Simmons, chairman and chief executive officer of Simmons Browder Gianaris Angelides & Barnerd LLC. "Holland was the natural choice."
Exterior work on the 70,000-square-foot, six-story structure includes complete removal of the existing single pane glass walls and replacing them with a more energy efficient curtainwall system.?Site work includes vacating two adjacent streets to allow for additional employee and visitor parking, as well as removal and replacement of existing asphalt paving. The center core office area will consist of open cubicles with exposed ceilings. Interior space will encompass 75 to 80 offices, some with moveable walls to adjust as needed, a deposition room and server room. With completion slated for the end of the year, the Simmons firm will soon be able to consolidate its 225 employees, currently working from seven separate locations in East Alton and Bethalto.

Simmons said pursuing a LEED certification for the new building is in line with other environmentally focused initiatives at the law firm, adding that last year it saved nearly 400 trees and 70 cubic feet of landfill through a shredding and recycling program.
