Holland Construction building Family Aquatic Center

SALEM, ILL. – Pool season ended a little early this year in Salem, as Holland Construction Services Inc. got a jump start on the city’s new family aquatic center, scheduled to open in May, just in time to kick off the 2010 swim season in style.

Located in Bryan Memorial Park near the site of the recently demolished old pool, the new $3.385 million Family Aquatic Center will include an 8,937-square-foot main pool, a 720-square-foot toddler pool, large bathhouse, mechanical building and new drive and parking lot.

Innovative features like a large water slide, several play and water features and large shade umbrellas surrounded by extensive landscaping will complete the recreational getaway.

“Everything is going along great – and that’s a credit to Holland Construction,” said Salem city manager Thomas Christie. “Holland has been very mindful of the concerns of the community and the administrative staff, and we have been very impressed with the quality of the construction management.”

Christie said weekly progress reports issued by Holland allow any concerns that might arise to be quickly addressed.

The aquatic center replaces the former public pool in Salem that was more than 70 years old, believed to be the oldest public pool in the state of Illinois, Christie said.

“This new multi-purpose facility will allow for many more aquatic recreational activities for the community,” he added. “It will provide opportunities for competitive and recreational swimming, and will also have a zero-depth entry in one end for young children.”

Design was provided by Counsilman-Hunsaker, St. Louis aquatic designers who teamed with FGM Architects of O’Fallon, Ill. on architectural services.
