Holland Construction Services Building Creal Springs Elementary
MARION, ILL. – Holland Construction Services Inc. will begin construction in June on the new Creal Springs Elementary School for Marion, Ill.’s Community Unit School District #2.
Design Architects, Inc., a division of Hurst-Rosche Engineers, Inc. of Hillsboro, Ill., designed the building for long-term durability and energy efficiency. Heating and cooling will be provided with a geo-thermal system, and natural daylight will be tapped into as much as possible, streaming in during the morning and evening and reflected mid-day by use of sunshades to further increase efficiency. Curved skylights will allow additional daylight into the building.
The new $13 million, 67,000-square-foot school is replacing a 100-year-old Pre-K to eighth-grade facility that has become overcrowded as the surrounding area continues to steadily grow. Tom Gipson, director of facilities for Marion CUSD #2, said children in the community will be able to attend school in a building constructed with a hardened storm structure, built to new seismic codes, and that is energy efficient with construction technologies that will serve as energy conservation teaching tools for the next generation.
Gipson said Holland Construction was chosen for the project for a number of reasons, but the primary motivation was the excellent references from previous clients and other contractors with whom they had worked.
“Words like integrity, fair, problem solvers, on time and on budget kept coming up with every reference call we made, along with some unsolicited comments,” Gipson said. “Holland Construction also had extensive experience as Construction Manager with educational as well as other types of building projects.”
